Community Commissioning

Community Commissioning

Community Commissioning is a new concept started as a Commissioner Doctoral Thesis from District J.

It’s a simple concept of how we go into your neighborhoods and provide service.

The goal of Community Commissioning is to reach out to units who don’t frequent roundtable and to generate more unit contacts that the standard Unit Commissioning model using Community Gatherings.

So what are Community Gatherings (CGs)?

Community Gatherings are get togethers where units from shared communities will gather and have open conversations that benefit their units. These gatherings are not there for trainings, presentations, or lectures.  We are holding these so we can listen and learn.

Some key points of Community Gatherings:

  • The gatherings are close to you so you don’t have to drive very far.
  • Gatherings are designed to group units together that share community resources and school districts.
    • These units may be resources to each other, especially when it comes to community engagement, recruitment and program planning.
    • If a leader needs help, bring that issue to the gathering and the Scouters can put their brains together to help solve problems.
  • New leaders and den leaders can use these gatherings to get new ideas, and keep their programs fresh. So, encourage Cubmaster and Scoutmaster to invite their whole unit.
  • The gatherings provide social interaction in an environment where others speak the same Scout lingo.
  • This is a non-uniform event, come ready to have fun and be productive.
  • Community Gathers may end up meeting in spaces that the uniform should not be worn in, like breweries, or bar and grills.

In District G, we have five general communities:

  • Mahtomedi area
  • St. Croix (Marine on St. Croix to Afton, centered around Stillwater)
  • Woodbury
  • St. Paul Park / Newport / Cottage Grove Area
  • South St. Paul / Inver Grove Heights
